Invitation of Applications for Participation in IDEAs Workshop on Policy Trends, Growth Patterns and Distributional Outcomes Under Globalisation and International Conference on ‘Economic Openness and Income Inequality: Policy Options for Developing Countries in the New Millennium’ to be held in Shanghai, China, 21-27th August 2006

International Development Economics Associates (IDEAs) is organizing a four day workshop followed by a two day international conference (with a one day break in between) at the Shanghai Administration Institute (SAI) in Shanghai, China between 21-27th August, 2006. Workshop discussions would be centred on the theme: Policy Trends, Growth Patterns and Distributional Outcomes under Globalisation and the conference is titled ‘Economic Openness and Income Inequality: Policy Options for Developing Countries in the New Millennium’. The participants to the conference besides others include Prof K.S.Jomo, Prof. Andrea Giovanni Cornia, Prof. Thandika Mkandawire, Saul Keifman, Prof Juan Carlos Moreno-Brid , Prof Abhijit Sen, Prof Carlos Medeiros, Prof Branko Milanovic, Terry Mckinley, Prof Jayati Ghosh, Prof. C.P.Chandrasekhar,  Prof. Prabhat Patnaik, Dr. Franklin Serrano, Prof.Cui Zhiyuan, Prof. Andong Zhu and Prof. Dic Lo.

Economic assessments of the impact of globalization differ, inter alia, on the nature and determinants of inter-country and intra-country distributional outcomes in recent years. There is no consensus on how such inequalities have moved and on what influences changes in such inequalities in either direction. Further, such differences on intra-country inequality relate not only to the poor performers among the developing countries, but even to the rapidly expanding economies in Asia. There are three related issues of relevance in this context: (i) the relationship between the increasingly homogenous patterns of growth across countries and the adoption of policies that emphasize economic openness and the primacy of markets; (ii) the relationship between this pattern of growth and distributive outcomes; and (iii) the trends in inequality and relative deprivation in recent years. The sessions in the workshop and conference would address these themes, with focus on the alternatives that are necessary and feasible in the current conjuncture and the foreseeable future. Some very prominent people in the field will be taking up the lectures ( Prof Jomo K.S, Andrea Giovanni Cornia , Prof. Charles Abugre, Juan Carlos Moreno Brid, Franklin Serrano, Prabhat Patnaik etc)

Applications:

Applications to participate in the workshop and attend the conference are invited from young economists from developing countries who have completed or are close to completing their Ph.D. In addition, individuals with a strong economics background involved in advocacy work with civil society organizations or engaged in policy making activities are welcome to apply.

Participants would be expected to stay for a total of 8 nights, arriving on the 20th of August and leaving on the 28th of August, 2006. Selected participants will be provided full funding for travel, besides boarding and lodging (on a twin sharing basis), to attend both the workshop and the conference. Applicants from low-income developing countries will get preferential treatment with regard to funds. Researchers from the "South" are especially encouraged to apply. However, those candidates who have attended an IDEAs workshop in the past one year will not be given preference.

The workshop will be organized in four modules on each of the four days: three of them would be in the form of lecture-cum-discussion sessions (of one and a half hours each) followed by a two hour session where some of the participants would be invited to make presentations in their current area of research.

How to Apply:

A letter of application, accompanied by a recent version of the curriculum vitae and one letter of recommendation should be sent by 30th May, 2006, 15th June in case of Chinese applicants ( deadlines can be extended for a few days in case of genuine problems) to Prof. C P Chandrasekhar or Prof. Jayati Ghosh at the addresses given below.  In addition, all applicants must send an abstract of one of their recent research papers on an area of their choice with the applications. From among the chosen candidates, some of the submitted papers will be selected for presentation during the workshop. However, selection for participation in the workshop will not be based entirely on the quality of abstracts.
